We’ve been back a couple of weeks now, which means it’s officially that time.

The new yearly wall calendar comes out.
Pens are uncapped.
And the company annual dance begins.

No overlaps if possible.
Everyone trying to be considerate.
Everyone also quietly trying to remember whether July or August was hotter last year.

There’s a lot of standing around the calendar, mug in hand, squinting, pointing, and saying things like,
“I could do that week…”
“Well, I was thinking maybe then…”
“Oh — are you already there?”

It’s polite.
It’s cautious.
It’s very Interdelightful.

Except for one slightly unhinged individual..

While the rest of us are mentally placing ourselves somewhere warm in the middle of summer, it turns out someone has already booked a week.

And not for later in the year.

It’s next week.

At first, the reaction was pure disbelief.

We’ve only just got back.
It’s absolutely freezing.
Who takes this week off?

Then came the pause — the nervous giggle, the second look at the calendar.

Because the more we thought about it, the cleverer it seemed. Who wouldn’t want an extra week off before Valentine’s Day? Time to recharge, reset, and come back ready.

And just like that, disbelief turned into respect.

This wasn’t such a silly idea after all — and judging by the looks around the room, we all wish we’d thought of it first.

Maybe next year.
